It’s been a long time since I did much socket programming, and last time I did, it was in Java. It might seem an odd choice, writing a CLI in Java. A quick web search failed to bring up the specification for this API, but it did find a specification of something called the Denon AVR control protocol - basically a text-based API to interact with the receiver over port 23. This is my first Android project so use on your own risk ). The app uses INTERNET, ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE, WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permissions to connect to the receiver (when on WiFi only) and to store/manage XML layout files on local storage.

You have to set the ip address manually in the settings but therefore it is quite snappy. Its best to use the app with a static ip address for the receiver since there is no automatic recognition.

  • Lock/unlock screen (keep screen on, lock orientation) with swipe up/down.
  • Simple shell-like interface to test commands.
  • Chain commands like: “Increase volume by 5 steps” or “Power on -> select Preset 1 -> set volume to -30db”.
  • Commands/button labels can be edited in-App.
  • Save/Export/Import/Share XML layouts (via Mail, Dropbox, local file manager…).
  • Create your own button layouts which fits your needs (there is a built-in default layout).
